While normal manuals are straightforward and overlooked, everyone scrutinizes a medical device manual. All training materials and regulatory reviews start with the manual and its contents. This means any improvements to the manual would enhance many parts of the medical device's ecosystem.
We saw this as an opportunity to make a lasting impact at Intuitive Surgical. Our main goal was to improve usability for the user. We saw opportunities to improve the manual's organization, instructional method, and visuals. We replaced the paragraph format with a step-by-step instructional method paired with imagery. We created a line-art style that removed unnecessary elements and highlighted key content.
The result was a manual that users love to use. The ability for users to find specific content dramatically improved. It accommodated both visual and written learners.
